Part 1 — Lessons (13)
1. Needs and Wants
A need is something we must have to live: food, water, clothes and shelter.
A want is something nice to have but not necessary: toys, sweets, games.
Tip: Before spending money, ask, “Is this a need or a want?” That is the start of being good with money.
2. My Neighbourhood
A neighbourhood is the area close to your home, with your neighbours and nearby places.
Good neighbours help each other, keep noise down, and keep the area clean. We greet our neighbours and treat them with respect.
3. Ways We Travel
We use different kinds of transport to move from place to place.
- On land: car, bus, bicycle, train.
- On water: boat, ship.
- In the air: aeroplane, helicopter.
Try this: How do you usually travel to school?
4. Our National Symbols
Jamaica has special national symbols that stand for our country:
- National bird: doctor bird
- National flower: lignum vitae
- National tree: blue mahoe
- National fruit: ackee
- National dish: ackee and saltfish
5. Sharing and Caring
Living together means we share and care.
We take turns, help those in need, and are kind to people who are different from us. Jamaica's motto is "Out of Many, One People" — we are one nation made of many kinds of people.
