1. Parts of a Plant
Most plants have four main parts, each with a job:
- Roots hold the plant in the soil and drink up water.
- Stem carries water up and holds the plant straight.
- Leaves make food for the plant using sunlight.
- Flower makes seeds so new plants can grow.
2. Wild Animals and Pets
Some animals are pets that live with people, like dogs, cats and fish. We feed them and keep them safe.
Other animals are wild and live on their own in nature, like lizards, mongoose and birds.
Try this: Name one pet and one wild animal you have seen near your home.
3. What Plants Need to Grow
Plants are living things. To grow well they need four things:
- Sunlight
- Water
- Air
- Soil (for most plants)
If a plant has no water or no light, it will become weak and may die.
Try this: Grow a bean seed in a cup near a window and water it a little each day.
4. The Weather
Weather is what the sky and air are like each day. It can be sunny, cloudy, rainy or windy.
In Jamaica it is mostly warm and sunny, with rainy spells. We wear light clothes and carry an umbrella when rain is coming.
Try this: Look outside. What is the weather like right now?
5. Weather and the Instruments that Measure It
Watching the weather
Weather is what the atmosphere is doing right now: how hot or cold, wet or dry, windy or calm it is. Scientists called meteorologists study and predict it.
Key instruments: a thermometer measures temperature, a rain gauge measures rainfall, a barometer measures air pressure, and an anemometer measures wind speed.
In the Caribbean, tracking weather carefully is important because of hurricanes. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November.
