Part 1 — Lessons (30)
1. Multiplication as Equal Groups
Multiplication is a fast way to add equal groups. 3 × 4 means 3 groups of 4: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
Learning your times tables makes this quick.
Try this: What is 5 × 2? (5 groups of 2 = 10.)
2. Halves and Quarters
A fraction shows equal parts of a whole. 1/2 (one half) is one of two equal parts; 1/4 (one quarter) is one of four.
Half of 10 is 5. A quarter of 8 is 2.
Try this: What is half of 6? (3.)
3. Fractions of a Whole
A fraction shows part of a whole. The bottom number is how many equal parts; the top number is how many you take.
If a roti is cut into 4 equal parts and you eat 1, you ate 1/4.
Remember: The more parts a whole is cut into, the smaller each part. 1/2 is bigger than 1/4.
4. Times Tables to 10
Multiplication is fast adding of equal groups. 7 × 3 means three groups of 7, or 7 + 7 + 7 = 21.
Learning the tables by heart makes maths much quicker. Practise the 2s, 5s and 10s first, then the rest.
Try this: What is 8 × 4? (32.)
5. Measuring Length in Centimetres
We measure how long something is using a ruler. Short lengths are measured in centimetres (cm).
Line up the start of the object with the 0 on the ruler, then read the number at the other end.
100 centimetres make 1 metre (m). We use metres for longer things, like a classroom.
Try this: Would you measure a pencil in cm or m? (Centimetres.)
