1. Counting and Number Order
Numbers have an order. When we count we say them in the same order every time: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…
The number after a number is one more. The number before is one less.
- After 6 is 7. Before 6 is 5.
Try this: What comes after 9? (10.)
2. Counting to 20
When we count, we say numbers in order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
After ten we keep going: 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.
Point to each thing once as you count it. The last number you say tells how many.
Try this: Count your fingers and toes. How many altogether? (20.)
3. Adding Small Numbers
Adding means putting groups together to find how many in all.
To add 3 + 2, start at 3 and count on two more: 4, 5. So 3 + 2 = 5.
Try this: Count on to solve 4 + 3. (7.)
4. Adding with Pictures
Adding means putting groups together to find how many in all. The sign is +.
🍎🍎 and 🍎 make 🍎🍎🍎. So 2 + 1 = 3.
Tip: Start with the bigger number and count on. For 4 + 2, say “four… five, six.” Answer: 6.
5. Taking Away (Subtraction)
Subtraction means taking away to find how many are left.
To work out 6 − 2, start at 6 and count back two: 5, 4. So 6 − 2 = 4.
You can also think of a story: you have 6 mangoes and eat 2, so 4 are left.
Try this: What is 10 − 5? (Count back five from 10 → 5.)
